ExcitingI found the characters especially Anna inspiring in the face of danger。 Finding joy where they could but never giving up。

Fast-paced, well-researchedFor those who love strong female characters who excel beyond even their own expectations, this book is for you。 Healey managed to recreate life in World War II France realistically while engaging the reader with details and emotions that put the reader in the moment。
Megan Town,
Very surface-y character development and lack of depth。 The story line was predictable but a fast read。

Here we go again!Another gem by Jane Healy, who hits it out of the park! How I wish this could be turned into a screenplay for a good old fashioned mini- series! That remark alone may give away my age bracket ;)Although I was born almost 10 years after the end of WWII, there us something deep within me that hopes no one, but no one, ever takes this historical event for granted。

The Secret Stealers is an amazing tale of World War II, from the perspective of a young American woman who works for the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), America’s then-new intelligence/spy service。 Anna winds up being trained to be a wireless operator and is flown into occupied France under cover to help the Resistance。 The topic is reminiscent of "The Lost Girls of Paris," but this book is quite different (and to my mind, more enjoyable)。 One of the underlying themes is that men often/alway The Secret Stealers is an amazing tale of World War II, from the perspective of a young American woman who works for the OSS (Office of Strategic Services), America’s then-new intelligence/spy service。 Anna winds up being trained to be a wireless operator and is flown into occupied France under cover to help the Resistance。 The topic is reminiscent of "The Lost Girls of Paris," but this book is quite different (and to my mind, more enjoyable)。 One of the underlying themes is that men often/always underestimated the capabilities of women, and that, oddly enough, made them more likely to succeed in their efforts。 There are some great scenes involving high stakes, both in Washington, DC and in France。 I thoroughly enjoyed the story and was delighted to find out, per the author’s note at the end, that many of the people featured in the story were either real people or based on real people and events。Highly recommended。Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read an advance readers copy of this book。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 One of the better novels about the French Resistance, OSS and the SOE。 A love story, too。Anna Cavanaugh, a Radcliffe grad is recruited by a friend of her father's into the OSS in Washington, DC。 This is the story of how she becomes an SOE agent in occupied France。 Many characters in the book are people that actually existed including Julia McWilliams Child, yes that Julia Child。 She was a member of the OSS and met her husband Paul Child while on assignment in China。 One of the better novels about the French Resistance, OSS and the SOE。 A love story, too。Anna Cavanaugh, a Radcliffe grad is recruited by a friend of her father's into the OSS in Washington, DC。 This is the story of how she becomes an SOE agent in occupied France。 Many characters in the book are people that actually existed including Julia McWilliams Child, yes that Julia Child。 She was a member of the OSS and met her husband Paul Child while on assignment in China。 。。。more

I feel like a jerk that everyone on here loved this book and I struggled to finish it。 I wanted to love it。 I never bonded with the characters even though the plot was interesting。 I found the love stories contrived and hollow。 Maybe it was a bad idea to read this right after finishing The Rose Code, because Kate Quinn is a brilliant writer and I have loved all of her books。 And if you love books about the women heroes of WWII, don’t miss The Huntress either。 。

I read a lot of WWII fiction and it always amazes me to read another story based on real characters - strong resilient women who helped the Allies win the war but have gone unmentioned in history。Anna is a young widow in Washington DC。 She's from a wealthy family and is working as a French teacher。 Her parents wanted her to come home to Boston after her husband was killed but she when she is recruited to work with the OAS in Washington it totally changes her life。 She is working at a secretarial I read a lot of WWII fiction and it always amazes me to read another story based on real characters - strong resilient women who helped the Allies win the war but have gone unmentioned in history。Anna is a young widow in Washington DC。 She's from a wealthy family and is working as a French teacher。 Her parents wanted her to come home to Boston after her husband was killed but she when she is recruited to work with the OAS in Washington it totally changes her life。 She is working at a secretarial job for legendary WWI hero Major General William Donovan and when she learns about the espionage work being done in Europe she wants to help。 When she gets the opportunity to go undercover as a spy in the French Resistance to help steal critical intelligence she is thrilled to have the chance to help the Allies win the war。 When she gets to France, she is in constant danger of being found out that she's really an American。 Even though she is fluent in French and an excellent radio operator, she is constantly in danger but is committed to sending needed information about Nazi plans back to the Allies。 The longer she is in Paris, the more convinced she is that she can make a difference。This is a tension filled novel about being a spy in Paris during the war, The main character of Anna is braver than she realizes and wants to make a difference。 The secondary characters are also well written and add more detail to the story。 It is apparent on every page that the author did extensive research。 This book has tension, intrigue, a bit of romance and a lot of history。 it's a fantastic look at women's roles during the war。Be sure to read the author's notes at the end of the book to learn more about real people that many of the characters are based on。 。。。more

“The Secret Stealers” is a PG rated look at life in the French Resistance during World War II。 The main character, Anna Cavanaugh joins the newly-formed OSS, The Office of Strategic Services in Washington, DC, as a secretary。 She yearns to expand her life, and serve her country, so she puts herself forward for an operative position。 She heads to London for training and then is dropped into Occupied France as wireless operator。 She faces challenges as a spy and as a woman。 I recommend this book t “The Secret Stealers” is a PG rated look at life in the French Resistance during World War II。 The main character, Anna Cavanaugh joins the newly-formed OSS, The Office of Strategic Services in Washington, DC, as a secretary。 She yearns to expand her life, and serve her country, so she puts herself forward for an operative position。 She heads to London for training and then is dropped into Occupied France as wireless operator。 She faces challenges as a spy and as a woman。 I recommend this book to younger readers and to readers who haven’t read much about World War II。 ‘The Secret Stealers” is an informative read。 I obtained this book as an Amazon First Reads book。 。。。more

Amazing story of wartime FranceA fictionalized peek inside the women who made it possible to liberate France in World War II。 A couple of famous characters make some appearances and the descriptions are so vivid without feeling overly depressive even at such a difficult time in the history of France。 A great nod to the women of the OSS and resistance recently declassified who made the difference in saving lives before Normandy’s invasion。
Deborah,
There are a lot of books out about women and their role in WWII。 This one was fictitious with a few bits of real stories built in。 It is rewarding to read about amazing women and their contributions to the Allies winning the war。 This book was a good example of that。 I did not realize the spy roles that US women played prior to the US officially being in the war。
